                                                                                           Memorandum of Understanding

History was made on Tuesday 10th January 2017 when NBTS and SEM, both based in Ogbomoso covenanted to assist each other by working together institutionally and by promoting holistic Christian ministries, through, among others:
  • Promoting exchange of academic information and publication;
  • Encouraging faculty members and staff to engage in collaborative teaching, supervision, and research;
  • Partnering in organizing training programmes, seminars, conferences, workshops, etc., on issues pertaining to divinely inspired and prescribed approaches to sustainable human and environmental development.
  • Co-operating in other related activities considered of interest to our Mission.
The agreement, which formalized a relationship dating back to the mid 2000s, was entred into
being fully conscious of the fact that collaboration between the two bodies will enhance their vision and mission through links which the founders envisaged and encouraged all along
It was signed on behalf of their organizations by Emeritus Prof. Adetoye Faniran (SEM Executive Secretary) and Rev. Prof. Ezekiel Emiola Nihinlola (NBTS President), in the presence of representatives of the two organizations.

Dear O.O. .. and Emeritus Professor Adetoye
I am reviewing the student days of the 60s and the works on laterite .. and would MUCH VALUE any memories or photos (if any still exist) which you could send me.
The "capital" of Sydney laterite is Terrey Hills.
From there Adetoye has progressed to being described (by yourself O.O.) as one of the two ERUDITE GIANTS OF GEOGRAPHY.
Not an immense amount on Sydney laterite has been published since your Ph.D. thesis but recently the CHINESE HAVE ARRIVED to tackle our geology.   They have published ONE PAPER (Chinese .. but is being translated to go in Geological Society of Australia, in English).
SOMEBODY --- was it you ---- nominated Terrey Hills laterite as GEOHERITAGE.
The Government, however, had not been doing much on that and so I have re-nominated such, at both Terrey Hills over and Tumbledown Dick exposures.
I append below copy of some correspondence which has been referring to Adetoye .. and that he "Went to God" (to God's service) but has the interest in laterite ALSO been kept up, please?
I see you have written materialism is "regarded as one of the most serious dysfunctional values for the ecosystem".
You will be pleased I think to hear that ---- Much water seeps from under the Terrey Hills laterite and this gave rise to springs.    The springs are no longer needed after Terrey Hills got connected to "town water" and so they are now a "just history" matter.   But near one of the best known springs the Catholics are going to build a SACRED FOREST .. regeneratation .. for Duffy's Forest (Terrey Hills was once called Duffy's Forests) plants association has become endangered . ... and the plant mostly strongly of all associated with laterite .. GREVILLEA CALEYI has fallen CRITICALLY endangered.
As you know, 816 species have become extinct and 11, 046 species are now threatened with extinction.
Australia's Great Barrier Reef is now believed critically threatened with coral bleaching (can be fatal for polyps) from Global Warming.
I am watching those things and also trying to work out how laterite forms. I've a number of webpages on laterite - compilations - and welcome anu labelled laterite photos.
Kind Regards,
Dr John Byrnes
(Sydney geologist)

The main thrust of this paper is to assess the impacts of the human being on the environment as a result of their perception of the environment mainly as a resource that must be exploited. Particular attention was paid to different strategies adopted by scholars in terms of managing nature both in the past and present with a view to ascertaining the extent of degradation and the tendency of wanton anthropogenic modification of the environment. The study was based on archival research methods and expository review of relevant studies. Suggestions on how environmental sustainability could be attained in the near future were proposed. Finally, as an alternative to ecocentrism and anthropocentrism, a theocentric perspective was suggested since materialism was regarded as one of the most serious dysfunctional values for the ecosystem. Therefore Christians needed to re-orientate their relationship with the material properties.

PS: Re: Into the unknown - the origin of springs (history of the Sacred Forest / Temples' spring at Terrey HIlls .. etc.)

PS:

Forgot to add site numbers .. here they are:
1= overnight collapse spring, 1a = large diameter well, 2 = large concrete water dam, 3 = where running water sound is heard, 4 = laterite boulders around a depression, probably an old well, 5= the original place I saw the softened sandstone said to hold copious water.   ( th-springs-1.jpg )

Hi Anne,
You get my map of the three springs or spring areas , and the three creeks coming off them - Neverfail, Kiernans and Cicada Glen?
Maybe what I sent already is enough for brief newsletter entry.
But I am always continually writing up my thoughts, and newly acquired notes, so here is some more ...
Cheers,
John
History of Sacred Forest / Temples' spring area -  Horseland/Hills original landholdings
Suddenly in studying Terrey Hills / Ingleside we find ourselves of late heading God/Allah-wards and or to the Sacred it seems.   Already the Baha'i choose a laterite hill  (with spring - even though the present Baha'is seem to know nothing of it) becaues it is the CLOSEST PLACE (physically) to Allah to be had anywhere around Sydney - the highest.   And yesterday I discovered the likely main spring of the Hills family area became the Temples' spring and now others (the Catholics) are to "build the Sacred Forest" there (at St. Anthony in the Fields).
Springs are a long-known feature of the geology of Terrey Hills.
But the geology of Terrey Hills is still not undertsood, nor can I even find find any one else actively interested in it all.   One other geologist is interested in the laterite, and in the past at least a couple of geologists have been interested in the laterite.
Commonly geologists don't agree with one another and hence there are no unanimous or consensus views held  today on the "Sydney laterite capital" of Terrey Hills.
Laterite around Sydney was subject of a Ph.D. study by a student,  Adetoye Faniran, who came from (and returned to) Nigeria.  Adetoye was likely guided by Prof David Branigran who has a very wide and general knowledge of Sydney geology.
Since When he returned to Nigeria, Faniran appears to have "gone to God" and eventually thought but little more re the genesis of laterite.  Adetoye Faniran since returning to Nigeria has been a prolific writer.  He wrote in year 2000 "Duricrust and Relief in Nigeria" (Journal of Mining and Geology, 36/2, pp. 209-216).   After that he began writing on environmental education and awareness.
Then in years 2000-2011 Faniran commenced doing largely religious writing (e.g. "Creation: Basic Theology Project", "Man as God’s Image.  Sacred Earth Ministry", "Nature in the Bible: A Commentary on God’s Revelation in His Creation", "Mama Patiences Ayodele Ajilo: A Testimony of God’s Goodness", "Tenants on Earth: a Compilation of Sermons on God, Humans and the Earth", "The Biblical model of environmental management and its implications for the kingdom of God", "Theology of Creation and Environment" ( http://adetoyefaniran.com/html /publications.html  ).    In 2001 he founded "Sacred Earth Ministry".
My efforts to contact Faniran, still a professor at some university or another, all failed .. he is now very difficult to find/contact it would seem.
But
Sacred Earth Ministry that Adetoye Faniran founded in Nigeria still seems to be going strong and three of its leading speakers are:
      * Environmental /Christian Theology Nexus – Rev. Dr. SAYO Oladejo (NBTSO/BATHOLO).
*Theological Roots of Environmental Crisis – Dr. O.O. ORIMOOGUNJE (Obafemi Awolowo University, ILE IFE Osun State).
      *  Towards an Ideal/Holistic Christian Theological Curriculum- Prof. S.P. ANGO (UMCA Theological College, Ilorin).
Presumably any of those would know where Adetoye is now(?).
They publish in Journal of Creation and environmental Care,  creationcare2016@gmail.com -  Cc:'ed here in hope of making contact
Yesterday you told me the springs lands of Terrey Hills (valley heads of Neverfail and Kierans Creeks) are womens land - birthing places - and of the Bandicoot dreaming or Creation Area.
The only catholics into Creation Spirituality who I know have been Sister "Teresa Green" (current whereabouts unknown), and Rev. Fr. Eugene Stockton - Catholic priest (retrd.) and archaeologist, now living at Lawson.
Do you know those ?
I am trying to work out just where the Hills lived etc... more to follow.
Laterite study in Sydney has been in relative doldrums for quite a time.   Most recently funding from a Communist source - China - had recommenced some instrumental studies.   "Beachhead" of that is at Long Reef and their interest has not extended so far to Terrey Hills.   They have published one paper to date.    Can send if you are interested --- it is Chinese with an English Abstract  (it's very technical and I'm sure would make little sense to most people).
The Chinese interest relates to global warming .. and laterite is thought to characterise such times.   A major theory anyway but most theories about laterite are debated also.    This interest is nothing to do with present global warming per se -- rather all this around Sydney happened back in the Tertiary re laterite formation.   Nonetheless funding occurs on the assumption that working out what happened in the past can help in knowing what lies ahead for Earth and all on her.
Cheers, John
